MYSTERY SOLVED: “THE SIMPSONS” TOWN OF SPRINGFIELD IS BASED ON……[PICS]

“The Simpsons” has made a long-running joke of hiding the true inspiration for “Springfield,” since there are so many towns and cities in America with that name. But now creator MATT GROENING has announced which Springfield is the “real” Springfield.  He tells “Smithsonian” magazine, quote, “Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon.

“The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show ‘Father Knows Best’ took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown.

“When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name.  I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S.

“In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, ‘This will be cool . . . everyone will think it’s their Springfield.’  And they do.”  (Or they DID, until now.)

Groening has given fake responses when asked about Springfield in the past, so maybe this is just more subterfuge . . . but his explanation seems genuine. When the community-relations manager of Springfield, Oregon was told about Groening’s announcement, he said, quote, “Oh OK, we knew that.” And they did.  The local museum has a plaque from Groening, where he wrote, quote, “Yo to Springfield, Oregon . . . the real Springfield!  Your pal, Matt Groening, proud Oregonian!”

A website called Gizmodo.com used Google Earth to compare the “Simpson’s” Springfield with Springfield, Oregon.  Check out the comparison pictures ——>
